Starting as Gnu Safaris in 1994 with over 20 years’ experience guided by Johan, Cabassa Safaris was established in 2010 when Hardus joined the family business. The business expanded to Mozambique and Cabassa Safaris was born.
Cabassa Safaris own four big concessions in Mozambique – two in Tete province and one in Niassa province and one in the Zambezia province. In Tete, the concessions are managed from the northern and southern side of Lake Cahorra Bassa. The concessions in Niassa borders Lake Malawi on the one side and the concession in Zambezia borders the Indian Ocean and mighty Zambezi River.
The concessions cover over 1 6000 000 acres of land. Mozambique is the place for the Big Game hunter – not the faint-hearted.
Our main base lodge in South Africa is situated near Hoopstad in the Free State Province. The lodge is adjacent to the Sandveld Game Reserve, a 100 000 acres Government Reserve, which we utilize as one of our hunting areas. Cabassa Safaris hunt in various concessions all over South Africa to satisfy the various trophy needs of our clients. Clients can experience hunting in the big Government Reserves, privately owned game ranches, and big free-roaming areas. South Africa offers all the available plains game, the Big Five, small game, all game bird species and night hunting.
Cabassa Safaris cater for a variety of clientele, these include hunters, bowhunters, handgun hunters, and wing shooters. We have various concessions that cater to all kinds of hunts. photographic, touring and fishing safaris are also catered for all over South Africa & Mozambique.
Luxury accommodation is available in our lodges, tented camps, top-class hotels and guest houses. The comfort of our guests is our priority. We provide top-class meals such as venison, wild bird and other traditional African dishes. All our meals are complemented with the finest South African wines. Special dietary needs can be catered for.

Meet the Team
Johan van Zyl
Outfitter & Professional Hunter)
Johan was born into a hunting family. He joined his father on an elephant hunt at the age of 7 and that is where his love to hunt big game started. He has been hunting for the 48 years and has gathered vast experience in all aspects of hunting. Johan is a perfectionist in hunting big game and is a registered Big Game P.H. He’s our “go-to” man and one of the mentors in the Cabassa Safaris team.
Hardus van Zyl
(Outfitter & Professional Hunter)
Born and raised in the Free State province of South Africa, Hardus has answered the irresistible call for hunting and the outdoors. He joined his father on his rst lion hunt at the tender age of nine. Since then he has had a passion to hunt the big African cats. After Hardus received a Degree in Law and Business Psychology in 2010 at the North West University of South Africa he joined the Cabassa team. Since then he guides most of the leopard, buffalo and lion hunts in Mozambique and South Africa.
Annette van Zyl
(Cabassa Safaris Financial/Lodge Manager)
Annette and Johan have been married for 38 years. She pursued a career as a financial clerk and later as Financial Manager at Case International. Annette has been our financial guru and manager of lodges since 1999.
Kyne is a 4th generation African hunter and an ardent animal conservationist. He has hunted trophy plains and dangerous game with some of the great names in the international industry for over a decade. He is well known for making each hunting experience a unique and totally rewarding one. Kyne joined Cabassa Safaris in 2018 to lead the Professional Hunting team in Mozambique and is a highly valued member of the team with his boundless energy, off beat sense of humor and experience
Head of Filmaking
Kolby is the Head of our Cabassa Filmmaking unit. He has a degree majoring in Cinematography and Film Production. He makes use of his skills by capturing our client’s experiences with high quality, uniquely tasteful films while taking clients specific requirements into account. JF de Koker
In 2010 I completed my Professional hunting course. Thereafter in 2011 I completed my degree in Tourism & Geography at Potchefstroom North West University. I did my apprenticeship in the heart of the Kalahari in South Africa, where after I did extensive hunting Southern Africa. I spent 2017/18 in a photographic concession in the beautiful Okavango Delta in Botswana. Wild, Ethical & Sustainable hunting is what I strive for.
Lukas & Wiehan van der Merwe
After many years in the business world Lukas retired to his beautiful farm in the Baviaanskloof Mountains. Lukas and his son, Wiehan, manage and operate the tours for Cabassa Safaris.

These two have proven that they’re a wonderful combination together. Japhet and Mark can turn any ingredient into a delish home cooked meal!
Jeandre joined Cabassa Safaris in May 2018. He grew up in the Free State Province of South Africa, where he discovered his passion for hunting. He has a great passion for the outdoors and wildlife. He finds peace in the outdoors and often calls it his “office”.
Michael is an ardent outdoors man. He is a passionate Bow Hunter from a young age. In 2009 Michael received a Degree in International Trade and Marketing; later that year he completed his Professional Hunters course. He helps Cabassa Safaris on a regular basis and is a big asset to the company.
